The Catalog

by Dax Montana on Feb.27, 2009, under General

My new catalog arrived today, a wish book of sorts. Although it’s not the original wish book, the Sears Catalog, for me it is packed with plenty of wants. I don’t want the typical consumer goods. I want fruit trees. I think Stark Bros Nursery probably has the best selection.

I’ve never been much of a gardener…except for hydroponics and grow lights. I have an acre of land sitting idle. I really should put it to use. I have a spot picked out for a garden with the traditional veggies, squash, beans, carrots, corn and of course tomatoes. A victory garden of sorts, I’m taking tips from this Guy.

I really want to grow fruit trees, dwarf, semi-dwarf, but not full sized trees. I have three small peach trees now. They produce a little fruit but I should spray them. I can turn apples and peaches into “wine” too. I should make my land produce. I want to plant some blackberry vines and blueberry bushes too. I just read that there is a vineyard in the county on only a half acre. I thought that sounded ridiculous until I thought about the Tax incentives for farmers. Shit, maybe I could get paid for not growing. Dax Montana Farms…heh!

The only thing that keeps me wishing and not doing is uncertainty. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stay here if I get a job offer elsewhere. Before now I was busy with school and work. I have the time, just not the security. The trees will take a couple of years before they start to produce. Oh well, I’ll just keep on wishing.

Just Damn!

Blackberries should do pretty good..FarmerSeed.com offers a thornless variety that I am thinking about getting if I can figure where to put them. They offer 4 for 14.99 and four this year will be a dozen vines by next year with more berries than I will ever eat.

Strawberries also should do well there with the cooler summers than we have here. Pole beans will damn sure grow there!

I’ve ordered some stuff from Stark Bros. Brierless blackberrys and some fruit trees. The blackberries were grafted stock and looked pretty ragged when I got them. Ragged being dead looking. WTH, I potted them first and they all survived and thrived.
Shows you how much I know.
